Precautions to Keep Your Pet Safe When Cold Weather Is Present
If you discover the temperature is going to be below the freezing level, it is best to refrain from keeping your pet outdoors for long durations of time. While some dogs are acclimated to cooler weather, and some are breeds that can be subjected to freezing temperatures longer than others; it is always best to refrain from allowing your pet to remain outdoors if possible. If you have an outdoor cat, bring them inside when the temperature plummets. If you have a dog, take them for shorter walks than the norm.
Signs Your Pet Is Suffering From Cold Weather Conditions
If your pet experienced prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures, the risk of frostbite and hypothermia will be present. Telltale signs of these problems include shivering, trouble breathing, and extreme weakness. If your pet is displaying any of these symptoms, bring them to our veterinarian immediately.
What to Do If Your Pet Was In Freezing Temperatures
If you discover your pet was outdoors when freezing temperatures were present, it is best to call our veterinary team to alert our practice so we can be ready to treat your pet when you arrive. Cover your pet with warm blankets or towels, but avoid using heating pads directly on your pet’s skin as they can cause burns. Instead, wrap a heating pad with another blanket or towel to help warm your pet as you transport it to our animal hospital.
